Ecopower is the focus this month of our Strength of cooperatives series. This cooperative society is set to build four wind turbines in Asse this coming autumn, with the overall capacity to generate environmentally sound electricity to cater for the power requirements of 6.000 households. ‘This involves an investment of over 10 million euro, says Tom Willems from Ecopower. ‘We are completely open to cooperative capital under this heading. The subscription offer is targeted not only on all households in Asse and the surrounding area but also on people living outside the region. The aim is for the windmill project to be completed without having to rely on a bank so that shareholders will own all of the installation and infrastructure. Our membership comprises shareholders and customers/buyers of environmentally sound electricity. Rather than profits, the focus is on providing green power at a fair price.’ (RK, sep 2014)
