Arthur Gamble from the UK used to teach at the British School in Tervuren. He has long played an active role in local voluntary organisations. In October of last year he fought for the first time in the local elections in Tervuren. ‘I failed to get elected but I will be sitting on an advisory council for the reception of non-native speaking newcomers. I am keen to be involved in the debate on how we can help them to integrate.’ He believes we should adopt a generous attitude towards new residents. ‘They often suddenly arrive with their entire families, flying in from places such as Asia, Africa and elsewhere and have to contend with a different language and culture. Rather than being at their heels we should lend them support. A team of non-native volunteers should offer these people guidance and help them to engage with voluntary organisations.’ (RK, maa 2013)
