Jean-Paul De Greef from Sint-Genesius-Rode produces organs with wooden pipes. No mean feat considering how little information there is on this subject, so he personally has had to do quite a bit of investigating in this area.

Jean-Paul De Greef from Sint-Genesius-Rode produces organs with wooden pipes. No mean feat considering how little information there is on this subject, so he personally has had to do quite a bit of investigating in this area. De Greef developed his own prototype but was still not completely satisfied. ‘I decided I would really get to the bottom of all this when the time came for me to retire.’ And so it came to pass. The fragrance of freshly shaved wood fills the workshop where he is now busy building his third organ. He prefers to think of himself as a researcher rather than an organ builder. After going through the academic literature with a fine-tooth comb, talking to various learned people and trying, trying and trying again, De Greef has managed to identify the physical principles for deriving the perfect sound for all types of wooden organ pipes. It is all a question of dimensions, angles, air circulation, action and reaction. Jean-Paul De Greef has written two books about this subject. (RK, nov 2012)
