‘I believe in Europe.’ With these words Thomas Scheen set the tone of our conversation from the outset. The resident of Tervuren with German roots speaks of a vital need to draw lessons from history.
As for what he most appreciates about Belgium, he says it is our diversity, our easy-going ways and the art of enjoying life. ‘The pleasure-loving part of me was maybe less prominent in Germany.’ Scheen is reluctant to dwell on national differences. What is much more relevant is not to lose sight of the importance of Europe. ‘Are people still sufficiently aware of just how crucial the European Union is for our future? What binds us together is so much more fundamental than what separates us.’ (RK, okt 2016)
