The secondary school place shortage is set to be no less than 8.000 by 2024-2025 in the greater Flemish Rand area, according to the Capacity Data Monitor's 2018 report on the educational situation in the region.
This was the wake-up call that finally put capacity shortfalls at the top of the political agenda. Whereupon the previous Flemish Government poured more than 20 million euros into secondary education in the greater Vlaamse Rand area around Brussels in a bid to cut the anticipated 8,039 secondary school place shortfall to 5.660 by 2021-2022. The catching up process is underway but the target is still a long way off.
