Eager to help

‘It all started with running errands from time to time. And then I ended up doing voluntary work on a regular basis.’

As is often the case, Jan Vertongen also switched from one role to the other almost imperceptibly. He is now a welcome guest at the Eigen Thuis housing facility in Grimbergen for adults who are motor- disabled. ‘You have to want to help people. I suppose not everyone is cut out for this kind of work but I enjoy it. You do it for the appreciation the residents show you. Chatting with people opens up your world. Their stories and experiences are a source of enrichment. I am always eager to come and help out here.’
