Affordable housing projects

Mindful that living in the Rand is an expensive business, the Flemish Authorities decided in 1992 to set up Vlabinvest, an investment fund tasked with trying to offer affordable housing. This inevitably involves a process of trial and error. In 2015, Vlabinvest established 159 new accommodation units in Sint-Genesius-Rode, Overijse, Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Beersel, Huldenberg and Wemmel. This means a total of 856 buildings, or 35 a year, have been created since the investment fund‘s launch in 1992. These kinds of homes are available for rent or purchase below commercial market rates by people whose incomes are higher than the earnings threshold for social housing.
